چکیده

This paper presents a study for exploring the limiting timing resolution that can be achieved with a large volume 3-D position sensitive CZT detector. The interaction timing information was obtained by fitting the measured cathode waveforms to pre-defined waveform models. We compared the results from using several different waveform models. Timing resolutions, of ~9.5 ns for 511 keV full-energy events and ~11.6 ns for all detected events with energy deposition above 250 keV, were achieved with a detailed modeling of the cathode waveform as a function of interaction location and energy deposition. This detailed modeling also allowed us to derive a theoretical lower bound for the error on estimated interaction timing. Both experimental results and theoretical predications matched well, which indicated that the best timing resolution achievable in the 1 cm3 CZT detector tested is ~10 ns. It is also showed that the correlation between sampled amplitudes in cathode waveforms is an important limiting factor for the achievable timing resolution.

Simulation studies of CZT Detectors as Gamma-Ray Calorimeter

Several astrophysics and nuclear physics applications require the detection of photons in the energy range of keV up to several MeV with good position and energy resolution. For certain applications Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) detectors might be the detector option of choice. Up to now, CZT detectors have mainly been used in the energy range between a few keV and ∼1 MeV. They operate at room t...

Estimate interaction timing in a large volume HgI2 detector using cathode pulse waveforms.

This paper presents experimental results on the timing resolution achieved with a 5 mm thick HgI2 detector. The timing information was derived based on the cathode pre-amplifier pulse waveform, measured using a digital oscilloscope. The times of interaction were estimated by fitting the measured pulse waveforms to pre-defined waveform models. With this approach, problems related to the conventi...

CZT imaging detectors for ProtoEXIST

We describe the detector development for a balloon-borne wide-field hard X-ray (20 – 600 keV) telescope, ProtoEXIST. ProtoEXIST is a pathfinder for both technology and science of the proposed implementation of the Black Hole Finder Probe, Energetic X-ray Imaging Survey telescope (EXIST). The principal technology challenge is the development of large area, close-tiled modules of imaging CZT dete...

Development of Gold Contacted Flip-chip Detectors with IMARAD CZT

We present initial results from our evaluation of a gold-contacted pixellated detector using cadmium zinc telluride substrate produced by IMARAD Imaging Systems. The Horizontal Bridgman (HB) grown crystals from IMARAD have been shown to produce high resolution photopeaks, but they are also seen to have large leakage current. Our previous tests with IMARAD CZT showed that the use of indium anode...

Energy resolution improvement in room-temperature CZT detectors

We present methods to improve the energy resolution of single channel, room-temperature Cadmium-Zinc-Telluride (CZT) detectors. A new preamplifier design enables the acquisition of the actual transient current from the crystals and straightforward data analysis methods yield unprecedented energy resolution for our test-detectors. These consist of an eVCAPture Plus crystal as standard and 1 cm c...
